Borau – Hiking Trails and San Adrián de Sasabe

The long-distance hiking trail GR 15 Senda Prepirenaica runs through Borau. The village is also crossed by the Lubierre River, a tributary of the Aragón.

Nature

The Ruta del Cajicar de Borau is a circular trail from Borau to the Pista de las Blancas and back via O Caxicar. It climbs through shady woodland to the holm-oak grove and passes through former fields where two traditional huts with false domes can be seen.

The circular route “A San Adrián de Sasabe y vuelta por Troncito” begins in the surroundings of Borau and ends at the church of San Adrián de Sasabe. The route to San Adrián de Sasabe crosses the Río Lubierre on an access road and reaches the chapel via the final paved section of road. The return route leads over shady slopes and former fields to the church of Borau.

The Ruta de los Pajares “espaldaos” runs over the watersheds between the valleys of Borau, Aísa, and Esposa and then leads to Borau. Along the route, numerous stone walls, Mallatas, Bordas, and “espedregales” can be seen.

The route through the Valle de Arnás begins at the bridge over the Río Lubierre near Borau and follows the GR 15 towards Esposa. It ends in Borau, is approximately 9 kilometres long, and offers views of Borau and the Collarada massif.

The ravines of Borau are considered a particularly remarkable part of the valley’s landscape. In addition to the Río Lubierre, a mineral-rich medicinal spring emerges here. The SENDEROS EN BORAU project includes the restoration, marking, and interpretive support of several local hiking trails.

Culture

At the entrance to Borau stands the former school building, constructed in 1928. Borau has narrow, paved streets, slate and stone-slab roofs, and Pyrenean chimneys.

The monastery of San Adrián de Sásave was built in the Romanesque style in the 11th century on an older Visigothic structure. San Adrián de Sasabe has a rectangular single-nave interior and a semicircular apse with a quarter-sphere vault. The western portal of San Adrián de Sasabe displays influences from the Romanesque art of Jaca, similar to those found at Santa María de Iguácel.

San Adrián de Sasabe is believed to have been a bishop’s see in Aragón until the Diocese of Jaca was founded in 1077. Visits to the monastery of San Adrián de Sásave are arranged through Borau Town Hall.

Events

Borau celebrates its patron saint festivities on the first weekend of September. La Isolé is a cycling event in Borau that takes place every year on the first Saturday in June and lasts an entire weekend.

The XIV Jornadas de Ganadería Extensiva, Producción Local y Micológicas de Borau featured expert-led excursions into the surrounding mountain landscape, a handicraft and food market with products from regional livestock farming, and a tasting of “Ternera del Pirineo”.
