Montanuy: Townscape, Trails, Art and Tradition

Montanuy lies on a hillside terrace and offers views across the entire valley. In the town, the settlement has a radial structure around a large central square. These two features alone open up two perspectives: out across the valley and towards the centre of the settlement. For your own planning, you can consider the townscape and the landscape views as separate focal points before adding culture, hiking or MTB.

Culture

Covered passageways and narrow streets give Montanuy a fortified appearance. Works from the public art project “Calles vivas” can currently be seen in Montanuy. The parish church of Santa Cruz, also known as San Marcos, preserves its Romanesque portal and was remodelled in the 18th century. Casa Quintana is located on the outskirts of Montanuy.

The traditional Baile del tatero, also called ball de Tatero, is another cultural feature. It is a traditional dance performed at festivals in Alta Ribagorza and is represented in Montanuy. Montanuy has murals associated with the MurMuro Festival. Architecture, art, festival tradition and mural painting create different points of focus. Depending on your preferred daily rhythm, you can give these themes different individual weighting without having to combine them into a single sightseeing programme.

Hiking and MTB

The Oficina de turismo in Montanuy provides area maps, information about hiking trails and MTB routes, as well as information about activities. MTB Route 18 begins at the Oficina de turismo next to Casa Quintana in Montanuy, passes through Ardanuy, the Collado de la Forca and Vilaller, and returns to the Oficina de turismo next to Casa Quintana.

For hiking, the PR-HU 103 route runs from Noales via Escané to Montanuy and then back to Noales. Circular Route 10 links Noales, Benifons, Montanuy and Escané before returning to Noales. The two hiking routes therefore differ in their route structure: one passes through a sequence of three named places before returning to the starting point, while the other adds Benifons within a larger circuit. This difference provides an objective criterion for planning your day. The choice between hiking and MTB remains clearly separate from the cultural themes and the classification of the natural environment.
