Caneto: Rock Art, Mountain Peaks and Rural History

The Abrigo de la Selba is a protected rock shelter in La Fueva (Caneto), Huesca, protected for its rock art; as a Bien de Interés Cultural, it forms part of Aragon’s protection framework for rock art.

Culture and History

At Casa Buetas in Caneto are the traditional well and wine press Pozo y prensa de vino de casa Buetas. The school of Caneto was housed in a former chapel dating from the 18th century. Thus, alongside the protected rock shelter, there is also a historical building reference with its own chronological context.

Two decades later, Caneto was repopulated by a family that began a restoration project. In Caneto, a former house was also converted into accommodation for rural tourism. The historical references therefore range from a former chapel to a later conversion, each retaining its own chronological significance.

Shortly before Troncedo, a track leads from the Graus–Troncedo–Tierrantona road to Caneto and Clamosa. On 21 December 2016, a route from Pano to Salinas de Trillo led via Caneto and Trillo; on this route, Caneto was reached via a long uphill track to Plana Carrera, followed by a steep descent to the village. This provides both a track branching off from a named road and a detailed route description with clear changes in terrain. The two route details emphasise different aspects: one the connection via a track branching off from a named road, and the other the route with a long ascent and steep descent.
