Boltaña combines impressive natural experiences with an unusually vibrant culture. The town is part of the Sobrarbe-Pirineos UNESCO Global Geopark. From Castillo de Boltaña, the entire valley of the Río Ara can be seen, while La Gorga, a calm, clear, emerald-green natural pool in the Río Ara, is suitable for swimming on hot days. When choosing a holiday apartment in Boltaña, you can therefore consider whether landscapes, hikes, historic sites or traditional festivals should be the focus of your stay.

Nature, river and trails around Boltaña

La Gorga is also the starting point of the “Sieste y La Madalena” route. It is 5 km long, has an elevation gain of 150 m and is estimated to take one to two hours. The route follows easy forest paths and offers views of Lavalle and Boltaña. For your planning, the route length, elevation gain and estimated duration can be easily compared with a longer mountain hike.

The “Nabaín” route leads to Monte Nabaín, at 1,799 m, the highest point in the municipality of Boltaña. The ruins of the Ermita de Santa Marina are located on the summit.

Culture and traditions in Boltaña

Pirenostrum plays a special cultural role. The fair for makers of traditional musical instruments is held in the courtyards of Boltaña’s old town and is recognised as an “Actividad de Interés Turístico de Aragón” (A.I.T.A. No. 5). It takes place every two years, in even-numbered years, on the penultimate weekend of July. This fixed schedule is particularly useful when choosing your travel dates.

The Palotiau is also a visible part of the town’s cultural life. The Palotiau de Boltaña dance group has existed continuously since 1953 and performs during the San Pablo celebrations in January and the Fiestas de la Convivencia in August. The Palotiau moves through the streets of Boltaña and ends in the Plaza Mayor. The Hogueras de San Pablo festival, celebrated annually in Boltaña, combines a communal meal in the street with the Palotiau, dancing and music by the Ronda de Boltaña.

The celebration associated with the Ermita de Santa Lucía on 13 December still includes a religious ceremony. In the Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol, 27 carved choir stalls from the former San Victorián monastery preserve a historic part of the town’s history; they were transferred to Boltaña around 1950.

The Casa de la Cultura de Boltaña is located in a building constructed in 1820 that preserves elements of traditional architecture. The present-day library contains more than 22,000 items and hosts numerous exhibitions and events throughout the year. Castillo de Boltaña dates back to the early 11th century. Its origins may date to around 1017, while the first documentary references come from 1028 and 1030.

Choose a holiday apartment in Boltaña according to your travel plans

The combination of nature, festivals and historic sites makes Boltaña interesting for different daily rhythms. You can plan a trip around swimming at La Gorga and a short forest route, or focus on Monte Nabaín, the castle and the cultural attractions. Those travelling with several generations or different interests can take the fixed event dates, the estimated duration of the “Sieste y La Madalena” route and the character of the “Nabaín” route into account when making their own plans. A holiday apartment in Boltaña is therefore a suitable search option for a stay in which you want to discover the town and its surroundings from a fixed base.

From Sabiñánigo, Boltaña can be reached via the N-260 in the direction of Fiscal and Aínsa. This connection is useful for orientation when choosing Boltaña as a destination for your travel plans.
