Labuerda: Ice House, Churches and the Way to the Hermitage

The “Os Guarz” ice house in Labuerda is one of the examples of traditional ice infrastructure protected in Aragón as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. For planning a day, the history of technology, sacred art, routes and pilgrimage can be considered as distinct approaches alongside one another.

Culture and History

The Museo de Ingenios Musicales is located on the Plaza Mayor. It displays part of the Mur collection and uses historical devices to convey the history of sound recording and sound reproduction.

The Iglesia de San Vicente Mártir has a Gothic altarpiece from the late 15th century, originating from the workshop of Juan de la Abadía. The Centro de Arte Sacro de San Vicente de Labuerda houses a small collection of sacred art in the abbey restored in 2018.

The Casa Buil comprises a private oratory dedicated to the Assumption and a distinctive defensive tower. The building complex can be dated to the late 15th or early 16th century; the tower was probably built towards the end of the 15th century as protection against French invasions.

The Iglesia de San Sebastián de Labuerda was originally a Renaissance building and is documented as early as 1570; in 1776 it was extended in the Baroque style. The church has a monumental three-section tower, with the Peña Montañesa rising behind it.

Routes and Pilgrimage

A well-marked route leads from the Iglesia de San Vicente de Labuerda to the Ermita de San Visorio on a densely wooded slope. On the track climbing from a campsite to San Vicente, there is an explanatory sign about the Civil War; around 500 metres farther on are the remains of the trenches of the Nationalist army.

The Ermita de San Visorio is a small, rectangular masonry building that probably dates from the second half of the 18th century and contains wall paintings from the late 19th century. It stands beside a rock overhang and a spring at the place where San Visorio is said to have lived and suffered martyrdom with his companions Clemente and Firminiano.

The Ermita de San Visorio is visited on 15 May as part of a pilgrimage. The combination of an uphill route, wooded slope, religious site and regional history offers various ways to structure a visit to the area.
