Colungo between Rock Art and the Río Vero
Colungo can be understood through its culture, landscape and local traditions. The Cueva de la Fuente del Trucho is the only known archaeological site in Aragón with Paleolithic rock paintings.
Culture
The Centro de Interpretación de Colungo presents prehistoric rock art from the Río Vero and Sierra de Guara area, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rock shelters of Mallata contain schematic paintings associated with farming and pastoral societies of the Neolithic and Metal Ages between 5000 and 1500 BC. The Church of Nuestra Señora del Pilar is a late Gothic Aragonese religious building from the 16th century, constructed in 1575 by master builder Joan Torón and architect Joan Tellet. In Colungo, the Fiestas in honor of El Pilar take place on October 12. Cultural traces from different periods therefore stand side by side: prehistoric paintings, a late Gothic religious building and an annual festival date.
Landscape and Trails
The Portal de la Cunarda is a large limestone arch formed by the erosion of wind and water. On the return journey, the route to the Portal de la Cunarda follows an old livestock trail to Colungo, which still has some paved sections. From Tozal de Mallata, you can look out over the gorges of the Río Vero and the Choca. The Alquézar–Buera–Colungo cycling route lists the medieval town of Alquézar, the Villacantal Bridge, Buera, the Santuario de Dulcis, Colungo and the Centro del Arte Rupestre as points of interest. The limestone arch, the old livestock trail, the view over the gorges and the cycling route show the landscape from different perspectives.

Nature and Local Traditions
Colungo has a long-standing tradition of producing aguardiente and anise liqueurs. The Olivera de Nadal can be reached via a signposted access from the A-2205 road about 500 m before Colungo, followed by a path through an almond grove. Believed to be around a thousand years old, this olive tree has a trunk circumference of 13.65 m at the base and is 8 m high. In this nature-related context, the route description, the approximate age and the specific measurements can be considered independently of one another. The local information clearly distinguishes between historical evidence, landscape features, marked paths, a cycling connection and culinary tradition. This makes it clear whether the focus is on rock art, architectural history, gorges, activity or regional flavor, without equating these topics or blurring their differences for further planning.
