Sabiñánigo between Pyrenean Passes and Serrablo Culture

The Quebrantahuesos route starts and ends in Sabiñánigo; it crosses the Pyrenean passes of Somport, Marie Blanque and Portalet. Sabiñánigo’s cycling options also include numerous mountain bike and MTB routes for different ability levels.

Nature

In the municipality, Senegüé is home to the Centro de Interpretación de los Glaciares de Senegüé. It is located on the terminal moraine of Senegüé, one of the best-preserved glacial landforms in the Spanish Pyrenees. Another perspective on nature is offered by the En torno al Puente de Sabiñánigo ornithological route: it begins near Sabiñánigo, and bird species associated with river habitats can be observed along the banks of the Gállego. Culture

The Museo Ángel Orensanz y Artes de Serrablo in El Puente de Sabiñánigo displays furniture, household items and tools that document the history of the people of Serrablo and their lives in a partly harsh environment. The same museum offers individual and group visits; guided tours can be arranged with advance reservation.

In the municipality of Sabiñánigo, the town of Larrés is home to the MUDDI – Museo de Dibujo Julio Gavín «Castillo de Larrés», housed in a castle. The castle dates from the late 14th century and was expanded in the 16th century. Its collection comprises more than 3,000 works by 800 artists; 350 works are displayed in 14 rooms. MUDDI is the only museum in Spain devoted entirely to drawing. In cultural terms, everyday history and drawing can be compared in separate buildings.

The two museums also differ in terms of their content: in El Puente de Sabiñánigo, the documented way of life of Serrablo is the focus, while in Larrés the collection is devoted entirely to drawing. This creates two clearly separate cultural approaches within the municipality.

History and Technology

The Serrablo route of churches and hermit chapels includes places of worship with decorative elements from Visigothic, Muslim and Romanesque art. They were built between the middle of the 10th and the 12th centuries. Technical heritage includes the Molino Periel: its milling machinery is an excellent example of early industrial flour mills.

The Jardín de maquetas de Pirenarium features a model of the Pyrenean mountain range that is more than 85 metres long, 20 metres wide and 7 metres high. The cultural attractions focus on different themes: drawing, everyday history, religious architecture, milling technology and a mountain model stand alongside one another.
