Huerta de Vero – Riverbanks, Festivals and Culture

Huerta de Vero lies on the banks of the Vero River and on a slope of San Pedro. Houses made of adobe and stone are adapted to the natural surroundings and local tradition. Some traditional house entrances bear geometric symbols; paved courtyards are also part of the townscape. The municipality of Santa María de Dulcis, to which Huerta de Vero belongs, is one of the municipalities of the Parque Cultural del Río Vero.

Landscape

The Camino por la Ribera del Vero is an easy, family-friendly walking route along the banks of the Vero River. It leads to the remains of the Tejería and the ruins of an old bridge. From the playground in Huerta de Vero, you can reach the remains of the Tejería by crossing the river over large stones or by following the path with a concrete footbridge; access takes no more than five minutes. The Azud is located near Huerta de Vero and is a small, semicircular reinforced-concrete weir for regulating the river course. It can be reached via the Huerta-Alquézar road, a turnoff and a path of approximately 300 metres that crosses the river. Thus, along the Vero, a riverside path, structural relics and a hydraulic structure stand side by side in different forms.

Culture

The Iglesia de la Asunción was built on the site of an earlier Romanesque temple and converted in the 18th century into the Baroque church visible today. It retains an extensive interior decoration that together forms a monumental space. The Azud was probably connected with the former mill, now destroyed, and the Tejería, of which sections of wall remain. The church thus also preserves traces of different building periods, while the wall remains and the Azud point to the former use of the river area.

Festivals

On 20 January, the festival of San Fabián and San Sebastián is accompanied by nighttime fires. In May, the residents of Huerta de Vero take part in the pilgrimage to the Santa María de Dulcis sanctuary. On 15 May, Huerta de Vero honours San Isidro with a traditional Calderada de judías, a bean stew. The Night of the Ánimas includes the tradition of hollowing out pumpkins and lighting candles inside them. The festival calendar thus extends from the fire traditions in January and the pilgrimage in May to the customs of the Night of the Ánimas.

History

Three bridge piers remain from the Puente de Alcantariella. The bridge had at least four arches and possibly five. It was probably connected with a mill on the left bank. Despite the absence of the remaining parts, the surviving piers make the former bridge structure comprehensible in its preserved basic outline.
