Salillas: Renaissance, Ice House and Festivals

Salillas lies on the slope of a small rise above the Guatizalema River. The village can be explored through its religious buildings, stately architecture and historic technology; at the same time, many impressions remain tied to specific details, from the masonry to the preserved equipment.

Culture

The parish church of Santa Ana is a Renaissance building made of ashlar stone dating from the mid-16th century. The Palacio de los Marqueses de Montemuzo stands on one side of Salillas’s central square. The palace was built on the remains of an earlier castle, of which one tower survives. Its Renaissance façade bears the coat of arms of the Pomar family from the 16th century. The old Stations of the Cross have also been preserved in Salillas. This offers different perspectives on sacred architecture, the history of the ruling classes and traditional religious symbols when exploring the village.

Landscape and Village Character

The Pozo de Hielo is part of the historic village landscape. Its vault is supported by a central brick arch and three perpendicular ashlar arches. The ice house of Salillas was used to store winter ice and snow so that they could be used during the summer months. The Pozo de Hielo may be of Moorish origin, dating from the 15th century. It is located at the entrance to the village on the A-1216 road, near a group of small bodegas dug into the rock on a hill along the access road to the village centre.

About 500 metres north of Salillas stands the Ermita de San Felipe, whose extensive painted decoration covers the entire vaulted surface. Its approximate location and the fully painted vault are among the building’s distinctive spatial and artistic features.

Historic Technology

The Molino de Burjamán can be reached via a path from the road between Huesca and Sariñena towards the Guatizalema River. The vaulted cárcavo of the Molino de Burjamán still contains the metal rodezno that powered the millstones. The Molino de Burjamán mill still has its mill building and auxiliary structures with their equipment, including a cabria and a porgadera; however, it is steadily deteriorating. The surviving structures and equipment provide a different insight into the history of the village than the representative façades in the centre.
