Morillo De Liena is located at the mouth of the Barranco de Bacamorta gorge, where it meets the Ésera River. At the same time, the village is situated next to the junction of National Road 260 and the road leading down to Graus.

Landscape

The Ermita de San Martín is located on the northern side of Murillo de Liena in the Sierra de La Clusa. The surroundings of the Ermita de la Piedad include an extensive pine forest, a small open area, a Roman bridge and a waterfall. In the landscape, a forest, open land, a historic structure and a watercourse are thus thematically connected in close proximity.

Routes and Sport

The Circular a la Sierra de Morillo loop is an MTB route that starts in Murillo de Liena. MTB Route 11 is not signposted; a map or GPS device is required for navigation. It passes through Murillo de Liena on a circuit from La Puebla de Roda via Roda de Isábena, Nocellas and other stops, returning to La Puebla de Roda. The two routes described therefore differ in their respective design: one focuses on starting in Murillo de Liena, while the other is a circuit with several named stops and the necessary navigation aid.

The sports area on the banks of the Ésera in Murillo de Liena offers opportunities for frontón, tennis and futsal. In addition to cycling, this identifies another clearly defined sporting area in the village.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Martín in Murillo de Liena is a Renaissance church dating from the late 16th century. The origins of Murillo de Liena date back to the end of the 16th century, while the Ermita de la Piedad dates from the 18th century. The Puente de Hierro in Murillo de Liena crosses the Barranco de Bacamorta gorge; the Puente Barranco de la Piedad is a vernacular bridge dating from the 18th to 19th century. The churches, hermitage and bridges thus represent different historical testimonies within the village.

A tabernacle veil originating from Murillo de Liena dates from the 17th century. A coat of arms carved into reused limestone in Murillo de Liena depicts the IHS motif and may bear the year 1561. According to local legend, the Puente de Hierro served as scaffolding during the construction of the Columbus Monument in Barcelona. In addition to architectural history, the cultural details therefore include a textile object, a coat of arms with an uncertain date and a locally transmitted story.

The main festival of Murillo de Liena takes place at the end of July in honour of Saint James, around 25 July on the last weekend of July.
