Discover Lastanosa: Church, Hermitages and Landscape

Lastanosa is crossed from north to south by the Alcanadre River. The access road to the La Primicia valley leads over a small mountain range with rugged sandstone beds, beneath which clay or marl layers emerge; in places, there are small holm oak forests. The surrounding area also shows the transition from the formerly predominant dry farming to areas enhanced by new irrigation and now supporting new fruit orchards.

Culture and History

The parish church, Iglesia Parroquial de San Salvador, in Lastanosa was built in the 15th century over an earlier Romanesque church and consecrated on 30 April 1570. The parish church preserves three panels and half of the predella of an altarpiece dedicated to the life of El Salvador.

The village’s notable religious buildings also include the two whitewashed hermitages. The Ermita de Santa Ana is a rectangular building with a nave divided into three aisles, a wooden roof and a semicircular-arched door on the south side. The Ermita de San Sebastián is a whitewashed masonry building with a four-bay nave and a broad porch on the south side.

The houses also preserve specific historical details. Casa Calvo has an entrance beneath a round arch. The date 1574 appears on its central voussoir, while the inscription “Año 1589 Domingo de Pisa Sastre” is carved into a side voussoir. The house La Vieja at Calle Mayor 1 is an example of 16th-century vernacular architecture.

Routes and Feast Days

The Ruta de las Ermitas de Sariñena is a 106-kilometre route divided into a northern and a southern section. The northern section includes the Ermita de San Sebastián in Lastanosa. The division into two sections and the total length give the route a clear spatial and temporal framework.

Every year on 20 January, the feast day of Saint Sebastian, a Mass is celebrated in the Ermita de San Sebastián. Around 6 August, Lastanosa celebrates its patronal feast in honour of San Salvador. Thus, two different dates in the course of the year are associated with the local religious buildings and traditions.

Landscape

The landscape combines geological and agricultural traces: Along the access road to the La Primicia valley, rugged sandstone beds alternate with emerging clay or marl layers; in places, small holm oak forests grow. Dry farming was formerly predominant in the area around Lastanosa. The fields have been enhanced through new irrigation, and new fruit orchards have been established there.

In the wider region around Lastanosa lies the Real Monasterio de Santa María in Villanueva de Sijena, a monastery. The Castillo de Monzón, a castle, is also located there.
