Adahuesca between the Vero and Alcanadre – Culture, Landscapes and Trails

Adahuesca lies between the valleys of the Vero and Alcanadre rivers and is one of the municipalities in the Río Vero Cultural Park. The compact village centre is characterised by traditional architecture and recurring round-arched doorways on the façades.

Culture

The parish church of San Pedro was built in the 18th century in the Classical-Baroque style. The chapel of Saints Nunilo and Alodia is considered one of the most elaborate Baroque interiors in the churches of the comarca.

The Centre for Legends and Traditions presents old stories and legends, fantastic creatures, beliefs and rituals through panels, photographs, display cases and audiovisual media. Its exhibition also offers guided tours. The centre is located on the site of the former parish church and a castle built around 1055, the remains of which are still visible.

The Ermita de Treviño is classified as a Site of Cultural Interest and comprises a temple of Romanesque origin with a cloister. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Treviño is a surviving part of a former monastery dating from the 13th century; the former cloister can still be discerned from the outside.

Above the sacristy, Adahuesca’s esconjuradero is integrated into the church. It was used for rituals intended to ward off hailstorms.

Landscape

The Mirador de San Pedro in Adahuesca offers a panorama of the Sierra de Sevil. It lies within the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Park.

The Loma de los “dineretes” de Sevil is home to numerous fossils of the genus Nummulites from the Eocene, when this area was covered by the sea.

Trails

The Leyendas al paso route passes 11 information panels along the trails. The Paisaje mediterráneo route near Adahuesca combines ochre-coloured agricultural areas with paths through evergreen oak groves and a diverse range of flowering plants.

The Pie de Sierra route leads from the foothill landscape near Adahuesca towards Alquézar through holm oak forests, cereal fields and Mediterranean crops such as olive and almond groves. The Camino Natural del Somontano can be walked in stages as a crossing or along shorter out-and-back sections.

Traditions

Quesos de Radiquero offers tastings of its four main types of cheese during independent or guided visits. Adahuesca celebrates its major festivities in honour of Saints Nunilo and Alodia from 24 to 28 August.

On 20 May, a celebration takes place on the border of Adahuesca, Abiego and Alberuela de la Liena, along the Cabañera from Broto to Mequinenza. It includes prayers, a ritual at a stone cairn, and the distribution of blessed flatbread and paneticos. In Somontano, there are typical pozo-fuentes, which date back to the 16th or 17th century.
