Sipán: Church, Bridge and Guatizalema

The 13th-century medieval bridge of Sipán crosses the Guatizalema River. It is built of ashlar stone and has a single pointed arch with a span of 9.50 metres, resting on sandstone. It can be reached via a path whose starting point is at kilometre 8 of the A-1227.

Culture

The parish church of Santa María Magdalena in Sipán is a late-16th-century ashlar building that reuses some older elements and has later additions. Its single-nave interior includes side chapels and a star vault.

The tower of the church of Santa María Magdalena is square, also built of ashlar stone, and divided into three sections separated by cornices. Another religious building is the Ermita de Santa Lucía in Sipán, a single-nave chapel.

Sipán's main festival takes place on 22 July in honour of Santa Magdalena. Landscape

The settlement of Sipán lies on a saso west of the Guatizalema River, in an area with a deep valley channel. Sipán's elevated position offers a distinctive view of the right bank of the Guatizalema River.

The irregular terrain gives the townscape of Sipán a partly winding and broken structure. In the immediate vicinity of Sipán there is a weir, as well as flour and oil mills.

Getting there

When travelling from Huesca, the route initially follows the N-240 national road towards Barbastro. At kilometre 7, turn left towards Loporzano; at kilometre 8, continue towards Bandaliés on the A-1227.

The Sipán–Loscertales–Coscullano route begins in Sipán and is 4.3 kilometres long; the stated walking time is 1 hour and 10 minutes. Distance and walking time therefore provide two separate figures for planning your day.
