Culture

MAN is a permanent public institution dedicated to the research, preservation and promotion of modern and contemporary art. It opened to the public in 1999. Its collection comprises around 850 works by Sardinian artists from the late 19th century to the present day and continues to grow. Another established cultural address is the Tribu Museo comunale Francesco Ciusa, housed in the city's former courthouse, a listed historic building. It permanently houses the regional collection of works by the artist Francesco Ciusa, who was born in Nuoro; the museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and art workshops.

The Casa museo Grazia Deledda is located in the birthplace of the writer Grazia Deledda (1871–1936), who was born in Nuoro. Manuscripts, photographs, various documents and personal belongings of the writer are on display. The Museo della Vita e delle Tradizioni Popolari Sarde is Sardinia's largest ethnographic museum and is divided into ten themed rooms. One dedicated room displays 350 traditional types of bread. The Museo della Ceramica presents works documenting important Sardinian art schools and prominent Sardinian masters. The historic Casa Chironi is being converted and adapted for this museum.

Cityscape and history

Nuoro's historic centre can be explored on foot via old cobbled lanes lined with old stone houses, courtyards, arcades and small squares. The Museo archeologico nazionale di Nuoro is housed in one of the city's most important 19th-century palazzi. The façade features columns and a pediment reminiscent of a classical temple, as well as two twin towers on either side. The square features paving made of granite blocks, granite boulders and bronze statuettes.

Nature

Monte Ortobene covers 1,600 hectares and features high granite cliffs and depressions. There are opportunities for climbing on Monte Ortobene. At the same time, the mountain provides a habitat for mammals, birds of prey and other bird species.

Nuoro's intermodal transport centre allows tourists arriving by car or bus to leave their vehicle there and then use another form of transport.
