It also displays evidence of rock engravings from Othierie along the Irgoli–Capo Comino road and from Lucchiddo near the Irgoli–Norghio road. In the centre of the town, the Murales di Irgoli form a series of colourful, frescoed façades. The Chiesa di San Michele stands on the ruins of a Nuragic giant’s tomb and is known locally as Santu Miali.

Janna ‘e Pruna and sacred springs

The archaeological site of Janna ‘e Pruna lies on Monte Senes above the Cedrino Valley, with views over the Gulf of Orosei. The temple consists of carefully worked blocks of local granite. An almost rectangular forecourt leads to a circular cella with a central hearth and a bench running along the wall. The temple was surrounded by a trapezoidal sacred temenos, which enclosed an elliptical courtyard in front of the religious building, where the Nuragic people deposited numerous votive offerings for their deities. About 200 metres from the complex lies S’Untana ‘e su Zigante at an altitude of approximately 500 metres. The sacred spring consists of dressed basalt blocks and was dedicated to the water cult.

Festivals, faith and local cuisine

The main church of Irgoli is dedicated to San Nicola di Bari and was built in 1634. During Suchena, the Last Supper is commemorated after the brotherhood members’ foot-washing during the Eucharistic celebration in the homes of the respective priors. The Festival Internazionale dell’organetto takes place every year in mid-August and attracts musicians from various parts of Italy and from across Europe. In 2012, the Santu-Michelli festival in September was organised by the shepherds’ brotherhood; another festival took place in May under the responsibility of the historic Familitripide. At the 2012 Santu-Michelli festival, the communal menu included su sambeneddu, sheep-meat broth, sas cordas arrustu and sa suppa.

Panoramic paths and tours

Sa Conca Isteddata can be reached via one of the higher panoramic paths in the Irgoli area and is considered a natural granite monument. The route “Da Galennora a Pontesu e ritorno” includes a detour to the Nuraghe of Norgoe. A mountain-bike tour from Irgoli to Norghio follows unpaved paths with views of the Baronia Sea on Sardinia’s east coast. Su Notante also combines nature and archaeology: the monument is dated to an advanced phase of the Late Bronze Age through to the Final Bronze Age, that is, the 12th to 10th centuries BC. It is a sacred spring dedicated by the Nuragic people to the water cult, built above a permanently flowing spring that is still active today. Sa conca ‘e mortu is a Domus de Janas.
