Holiday apartment in Macomer: Archaeology, Museums and Landscapes
Macomer is a place where archaeological discoveries, ecclesiastical architectural history and a distinctive highland landscape come together. If you choose a holiday apartment in Macomer for a culture-focused stay, you will find several distinct points of interest: nuraghi, a necropolis, a museum with hands-on workshops and traces of different eras. The landscape is also ever-present – from the Rio S’Adde to the ancient oaks on Monte Sant’Antonio.
Holiday apartment in Macomer among nuraghi and history
Nuraghe Craba is a single-tower monument with a rectangular lintel, a circular chamber and two side niches. This makes it a single, clearly structured building whose form is particularly accessible to visitors interested in early Sardinian architecture when planning their trip.
From the municipality of Macomer, Nuraghe Craba can be reached via Viale Gramsci for approximately 7.7 kilometres, followed by a further 8.2 kilometres on the SP 43. The nuraghe is on the right-hand side. The distances given provide concrete guidance if you want to include this archaeological site in your excursion plans.
The Tamuli archaeological site comprises three giants’ tombs and a nuraghe. From Macomer, the described route leads along Corso Umberto I to the junction with Via Lussu and then northwest along the SC Monte. After about 4 kilometres, the site is signposted on the right-hand side.
The Venere di Macomer is also one of the remarkable testimonies to the area’s history: the basalt figurine is 14 centimetres high and was found in 1949 in a cave in the Marras area, in the gorge of the Rio S’Adde. The Filigosa necropolis contains four Domus de Janas carved into limestone. It gave the Filigosa-Abealzu culture its name.
Museums and churches as cultural discoveries
The Le Arti Antiche Museum is divided into 14 rooms and contains around 3,000 original objects from the 18th to the 20th century. The hands-on approach is particularly interesting for families: during educational workshops, children and young people can try out traditional tools such as small table looms. This allows a museum visit to be combined with an activity of their own, rather than being focused exclusively on viewing objects.
The parish church of San Pantaleo in Macomer dates from 1635. It has three naves, a portal with a pediment and a bell tower created by Michele Puig in 1573. The church of Nostra Signora d’Itria is regarded in Macomer as a surviving Byzantine trace. The church of Vergine del Soccorso is likewise regarded there as a surviving Byzantine trace. These buildings complement the archaeological sites with religious testimonies from different periods.
Elevation and nature around Macomer
The houses of Macomer are situated along the banks of the Rio S’Adde at just under 600 metres above sea level. In winter, they may be covered in snow. Centuries-old oaks grow on Monte Sant’Antonio near Macomer. If you choose accommodation for a stay combining culture and landscape, these two features offer a helpful perspective on the character of the area: Macomer is interesting not only for its individual sights, but also for its setting between riverbanks, highland terrain and ancient stands of trees.
