Fonni: culture and festival traditions

The Museo della Cultura Pastorale di Fonni is housed in an old 19th-century manor house. Images, sounds and traditional equipment convey the pastoral life of the Fonni community. The S'Istangiartu tradition dates back to 1842. The riders associated with it wear traditional costumes, ride decorated horses and lead the important processions from Fonni for Corpus Christi, the Madonna dei Martiri and San Giovanni Battista. During the celebration in honour of Saint John, Su Cohone de Vrores is carried in procession together with the statue of Saint John. Su Cohone e Vrores is an elaborately decorated, cake-shaped focaccia about 40 cm wide and around 10 cm thick, with cane sticks to which 160 bird figures and 5 chicken figures are attached. The Palio di Fonni takes place every first Sunday in August at the nearby racecourse.

Archaeology and regional mountains

Madau is a necropolis with four Giants' tombs. The tombs face southeast and are arranged in an amphitheatrical layout; they date from the Late to the Final Bronze Age. Gremanu is a Nuragic sanctuary with three temple structures. The archaeological site includes the only known aqueduct from the Nuragic period. In the wider area around Fonni are the Museo Etnografico Casa Montanaru and Museo Nivola museums, as well as Nuraghe Talei, an ancient site, and Nuraghe Unturgiadore, a historic site.
