In the 1950s, Eugenio Tavolara, then director of ISOLA, became interested in this tradition and worked with Sarule’s skilled craftswomen to renew and promote the art of weaving. Sarule is known for high-quality, colourful rugs woven on old vertical looms.

To Gonare: Forest, Summit and Panoramic Views

The route from Sarule to Gonare gradually climbs through a wind-shaped holm oak forest. Lilies and peonies bloom along the trail in spring. The approximately 750-metre-long T 602A hiking trail connects the eastern outskirts of Sarule with the main trail 602, which leads to Monte Gonare. Nostra Signora di Gonare stands at an elevation of around 1,100 metres and is considered the highest-altitude church in Sardinia.

From the central summit, where the church of Nostra Signora di Gonare stands, the sea can be seen to the east and west on clear days. This places both a nature-oriented route through the forest and a summit with far-reaching views at the centre of the day’s activities.
