Reichsburg Cochem: History and Interiors Open to Visitors

The medieval Reichsburg Cochem castle was restored and rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style by Louis Ravené in the 19th century, during the Romantic period of castle restoration. Its history thus brings together medieval origins and later, deliberately historicising design. The interiors open to visitors include the Knights’ Hall, dining room, hunting room and ladies’ chamber. These different room names offer several specific points of interest, rather than limiting a visit to the castle’s exterior.

The castle also hosts rustic medieval banquets on Fridays and Saturdays under the name “Gasterey nach Art der alten Rittersleut” (Feast in the Manner of the Old Knights). If you would like to include this in your plans, check the dates in advance, as the programme may change. This adds a special shared meal to the historical experience, without reducing the castle to a backdrop for just one activity.

Bird Migration or a Suspension Bridge?

Jungferweiher lake is an important breeding and resting area for many bird species. It is particularly relevant to birds during their spring and autumn migrations. This seasonal aspect makes the lake a different kind of nature attraction from a built landmark: if you are interested in birdlife, you can make it a focus of your holiday planning.

The Geierlay suspension bridge stands out for its impressive dimensions: it is 360 metres long and runs 100 metres above the Mörsdorfer Bachtal valley. It lies between Sosberg in the district of Cochem-Zell and Mörsdorf in the Rhein-Hunsrück district. Its location across two districts is as useful to know as the bridge’s dimensions. The castle, lake and bridge therefore appeal to clearly distinct interests: history, nature and a large structure in the landscape.

The Calmont via ferrata offers a different experience: it was established in 2002 as a joint project by the municipalities of Bremm, Ediger-Eller and Neef. Steel cables, ladders, and numerous footholds and pegs secure the route. The trail can be accessed in Eller at the railway bridge and in Bremm above the church; the hike takes around three hours. You can thus consider the viewing tower and hiking trail on the one hand, and a secured via ferrata on the other, as different ideas for an outing.

For families with pushchairs, the wider travel region also offers the 5.1-kilometre “Nature and Energy” wind trail in the Lieger Wald wind farm as a possible option. It is easy to walk, although the condition of the path may change. Check in advance whether the conditions are suitable for your visit. Cultural trails explore other themes: the Mesenicher Steinreichskäpp trail covers geology, people and history through information boards and sculptures. The Lenus-Mars-Weg connects Karden and Pommern; information boards share facts about excavations and the settlement of the temple complex.
