Mittelstrimmig: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Layensteig Strimmiger Berg is a 13.83-kilometre circular hiking trail that begins at the portal in Mittelstrimmig. The route includes three short climbing sections with marked bypasses, leads through stream valleys and past remains of slate mining, and offers viewpoints towards the Hunsrück and Moselle valleys.

Hiking and Countryside

The Layensteig trail runs through the Bildbach, the Mörsdorfer Bach and the Flaumbach Valley. Along the way, narrow natural paths lead through the stream and river valleys.

Circular Trails

Mittelstrimmig has a 6-kilometre and an 11-kilometre permanent hiking route under the DVV/IVV designation “Strimmiger Berg – Zeller Land”. The 6-kilometre permanent hiking route is a family-friendly circuit on field and forest paths around the Strimmiger Berg. The 11-kilometre route includes additional natural sections and views across the Hunsrück and the Moselle foreland. The permanent hiking route is available year-round, but there is no winter maintenance.

The Mittelstrimmig Local History Museum is housed in a former electric mill that was built in 1949 by the local mill cooperative; the flour mill operated until 1959. The museum displays equipment from the former mill, including a grain mill that was used until 1978. A shoemaker’s workshop and a wheelwright’s workshop in the local history museum illustrate rural crafts. The museum also includes a traditional Hunsrück kitchen, a bedroom and adjoining rooms. A small Roman exhibition and a collection on slate mining are also part of the local history museum.

From Mittelstrimmig, pilgrims travel to Maria Engelport Monastery in the Flaumbach Valley. In addition to the hiking trail, the 350-year-old Schock Chapel can be visited. A parallel path from the Schock Chapel leads to the Galgenflur, which was historically the last stop for a condemned person before the gallows. The Roman settlement southwest of Mittelstrimmig was significant for Roman infrastructure in the Hunsrück from the late first century to the end of the fourth century.

Together with Altstrimmig, Liesenich and Forst, Mittelstrimmig forms the Strimmiger Berg. The 19th stage of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig trail passes through Mittelstrimmig and Altstrimmig before descending into the valleys of the Bildbach and the Mörsdorfer Bach. Parking is available at the starting point of the Layensteig Strimmiger Berg in Mittelstrimmig.
