Culture and History

In the historic centre of Kaisersesch stands the town’s landmark: the leaning tower of St Pankratius Church, dating from the 13th century. The historic centre is enclosed by the church and the former “Prison”. The remains of a medieval castle house with a chapel and battlement are also located there. Other historic features include an old cinema screening hall and an open-air theatre, both of which can be visited.

Kaisersesch offers informative night watchman tours. The “Old Prison” in Kaisersesch, also locally known as “Prison” or “Bullesje”, houses a local history museum. The exhibits document life in a small Eifel town from the early 20th century through the post-war period to the 1960s; they include household items, craft tools and technical equipment. The Depeschenreiterbrunnen fountain on “Alter Postplatz” square commemorates the era of postilions, stagecoaches and mounted messengers.

Kaisersesch has a motorhome parking area for visitors. There is also a pilgrims’ room in the former “Prison”.

Cycling

The approximately 30-kilometre circular route of the Eifel Slate Cycling Trail can be started in Kaisersesch. Because of several steep climbs, the full route requires experienced cyclists and is not suitable for racing bikes. An approximately 11-kilometre downhill variant leads from Kaisersesch to Monreal; a train is available for the return journey or the ascent.

The approximately 17-kilometre Kaisersesch–Maifeld cycle route starts in Kaisersesch, passes the Roman Tower and the Swan Church near Roes, continues past medieval Pyrmont Castle and connects with cycle paths towards the Maifeld and Moselle.

Landscape and Trails

The landscape around Kaisersesch combines high plateaus and valleys. The Roman Tower offers views across the Eifel landscape. It was built in 1997 on the remains of a former watchtower on the eastern edge of the town.

Kaisersesch provides access to sections of the Way of St. James. The Pilgrims’ Fountain is a place to pause and reflect. The Kaulenbach Valley Digi Trail uses the Actionbound app and includes 11 stations with historical photographs, audio contributions, quiz questions and estimation tasks. The Kaulenbach Valley has developed into a refuge for rare and endangered animal and plant species.
