Leienkaul: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The 14.2 km hiking loop through the Kaulenbachtal slate region can begin in Leienkaul. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Leienkaul can continue their search for accommodation afterwards. Guided hikes through the slate-mining landscape are also offered by the Association for the Preservation of Slate Mining History.

Nature

The Kaulenbachtal valley between Leienkaul, Laubach and Müllenbach is a former slate-mining area. In 1988, it was designated a nature reserve, and in 1993 a protected cultural heritage zone. Its spoil heaps and mine tunnels provide a habitat for rare species, including wall lizards and hibernating bats.

The Wolfs-Berg and Höchstberg mountains are located near Leienkaul. The surrounding area of Leienkaul also contains the Hochkelberg, as well as Schafstall.

History

The Kaulenbachtal valley offers an experience of slate-mining history, with preserved mining remains, information boards, historic mine carts and a reconstructed slate-splitting house.

Maria Martental, a monastery and pilgrimage church, dates back to 1140 and is a highlight of the Kaulenbachtal slate region route.

Löwenburg, Cochem Castle and Pyrmont are located in the surrounding area of Leienkaul. Bürresheim Castle is situated in the wider region around Leienkaul.

Getting There

The Kaulenbachtal visitor route can be reached by car from the A48 via the Kaisersesch exit. Continue via the L98, L100, L52 and Breitenbruch to a parking area.
