Culture and History

Düngenheim appears in the oldest identified document, dated 11 July 1097, under the name Dunechinga. Its ecclesiastical heritage includes a chapel documented around 1190, a church built in 1738 and expanded between 1846 and 1848, as well as the construction of the present parish church in the 1920s. The new church was consecrated in 1925.

The inhabitants of Düngenheim first mined slate in a side valley of the Elz. At the height of slate mining, nine mines in the Düngenheim area provided employment for local residents. The Antonius mine employed 49 men in 1895; work there ended permanently in 1928. Basalt boundary stones bearing the emblems of Stuben and Himmerod have also been preserved in the area.
