Nature and Wine

Zell is directly connected to the Moselle Trail: Stage 14 reaches Zell from Reil via Marienburg, while Stage 15 begins in Zell and continues towards Neef via the Collis via ferrata. A circular walk of around 3 km starts at the town hall tourist information office and links Zell’s wine landmarks, historic houses, the former city fortification towers, the Moselle promenade, the Collis Tower and the Electoral Residential Palace. The 1.2 km-long Collis steep trail has sections with the character of a via ferrata, climbs 160 metres in elevation and has an alpine character; a detour leads along old vineyard walls.

Zell has around 400 hectares of vineyard area and approximately four million grapevines, with Riesling being the predominant grape variety. On the steep slopes, the work is carried out predominantly by hand because machinery can hardly be used there. Visitors can taste and buy Moselle wines directly from Zell winegrowers; many producers also offer wine tastings. The town has wine taverns and wine shops.

Culture and History

The Wine and Local History Museum displays a hypocaust heating system from a Roman bath discovered in Zell in 1987. A separate section is dedicated to the historic cigar production in Zell and preserves original cigar-making equipment. The museum also presents equipment from Kaspar Schleyer’s rope-making workshop, as well as iron pruning knives associated with Roman winegrowing on the Moselle.

The Round Tower and the Square Tower have been preserved as parts of the former city fortifications. From the viewing platform of the Collis Tower, the view extends across the entire Zeller Hamm bend of the Moselle. Zell Castle features Rococo stone figures and a wrought-iron window grille. The former synagogue of Zell stands directly next to Zell Castle. Thirty-two Stolpersteine in Zell commemorate victims of Nazi persecution.

Townscape

Zell’s Kaimt district contains a village centre with narrow, winding lanes lined with winemakers’ houses. The listed Boos von Waldeckhof is also located there: a half-timbered house built around 1600 as the summer residence of the Boos von Waldeck aristocratic family.
