Filz: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Between Jungferweiher and Ulmen Maar, the Ulmen Maar Tunnel connects the two bodies of water via a passage approximately 120 metres long, where visitors can experience geological history. The tunnel is largely accessible and free of charge, but at its narrowest point it is only 70 centimetres wide. Nature

Filz lies at an elevation of around 460 metres above sea level on a plateau offering expansive views across the Eifel. Jungferweiher, together with Ulmen Maar, is protected and is known for its abundance of migratory birds. A circular trail of around 3 kilometres around Jungferweiher is particularly recommended during the spring and autumn migrations.

Hiking and Cycling

Filz lies close to the Enderttal Traumsteig trail. It begins in Ulmen, leads through the area around Auderath and reaches Cochem after approximately 20 kilometres. Filz is described as a starting point for nearby Eifel hiking trails, including the Eifelsteig and the Traumpfade. The Vulkan-Rad-Route cycle route runs near Filz and is 77 kilometres long. Filz is also located in the Vulkanbike Trailpark area, whose network comprises approximately 750 kilometres of signposted routes.

Culture

Until the 1970s, Filzer Platt was the local language learned by residents born in Filz and was used almost exclusively in family and village life. Filzer Platt belongs to the Moselle Franconian dialect group. The chapel in Filz was first documented in 1569; the present-day chapel dates from around 1730 and has a high altar associated with Saint Nicholas, as well as figures of Saint Catherine, Saint Barbara, the Sorrowful Mother and Saint Dominic. In and around the village there are three wayside shrines and a wayside cross; they are maintained by their builders or their descendants. The bakehouse is now fired up only for special baking festival occasions.

Village Life

Visitors from outside Filz can rent the shelter through the mayor. It is mainly used for the annual Hinnig Hut Festival, which takes place on the first weekend in August. The tradition of erecting the maypole continues to be upheld in Filz. Hillisch is a Filz wedding custom in which unmarried young men say farewell to the bride.

Filz has good transport links to the A 48 motorway, which is approximately 6 kilometres away.
