Landscape and routes

The low mountain landscapes around the Knüll, Kellerwald and Habichtswald ranges give the district a different character from the river landscapes along the Schwalm Cycle Route. On this cycle route, meadows, fields, villages and half-timbered towns alternate. It runs mainly on paved or surfaced paths and leads to where the Schwalm flows into the Eder, just before Felsberg. At around 100 kilometres, it is a longer route option; the stated distance is expressly approximate.

For a shorter walk, the Steinkammergrabrunde near Fritzlar-Lohne offers a different kind of outing: this easy circular route is 4.90 kilometres long and is designated Nature Park Circular Route L1. This means two very different route formats are available—a short circular walk and a longer cycle route. If you are planning to ride the Schwalm Cycle Route, you can consider the rail connections at Felsberg-Gensungen and Schwalmstadt-Treysa as the stated travel options.

Art, crafts and regional history

The Malerstübchen Museum in Willingshausen combines 19th- and 20th-century art history with motifs from traditional Schwalm dress: paintings featuring these motifs are on display. Other exhibits focus on traditional Schwalm rural crafts, including whitework embroidery, knitting and spinning. Expert-guided tours include talks about the artists’ colony and its artists, Schwalm customs, and traditional crafts and whitework embroidery. You can therefore tailor your museum visit to art or regional traditions.

The Museum of the Schwalm in Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain features a reconstructed pottery workshop with ceramics and pottery traditionally used in the region. A large model of Ziegenhain Water Fortress shows its condition in 1761, after it was shelled during the Seven Years’ War. The workshop and model focus on different things: everyday objects and crafts in one case, and the depiction of a fortress at a specific point in history in the other.

The Breitenau Memorial also focuses on history: a permanent exhibition in the tithe barn commemorates events of the Nazi era. Its educational programme includes guided tours, walks, talks and readings. If you are interested in this aspect of regional history, it offers a distinct thematic perspective alongside the art- and craft-focused museums.

Traces of Wallenstein Castle

In the Knüllwald, the ruins of Wallenstein Castle stand on a mountain spur below Mount Babloh. The Schlossbrunnenweg passes a spring pond on its way to the castle well, which once supplied Wallenstein Castle with fresh water. The route and ruins offer another historical perspective: instead of a museum model, you encounter a place whose former function was connected with supplying the castle with water.
