Ottrau: Ponds, Boundary Stones and Monastery History
Accommodation in Ottrau
Ottrau lies in an appealing low mountain landscape. Nature and local history can be explored here from different perspectives: at the Immichenhain ponds, along the “Historic Boundaries” route, in the former monastery church and at the Steinmühle Mill Museum. These themes offer different ways to shape your stay around the landscape, architectural history or milling technology.
Pond landscape and historic route
The “Immichenhainer Teiche” area covers about 23.2 hectares and has been a nature reserve since 1985. Since 2008, the same area has also been designated as an FFH (Special Area of Conservation) site under the same name. Originally, the area comprised seven small lakes. These facts make the ponds a distinctive nature attraction in Ottrau and give the landscape a specific historical and natural context.
The “Historic Boundaries” route is just under ten kilometres long. It showcases historic boundary stones, some of which date back at least to the 16th century. The route also passes four springs in the Immichenhain district and skirts the “Immichenhainer Teiche” nature reserve. Along the way, you encounter both boundary history and nature themes, though they need not be the same experience: the stones tell of past boundary lines, while the springs and ponds draw attention to the landscape.
Another view of the landscape can be enjoyed from the “Immichenhain View” bench. From there, you can see across the village of Immichenhain, the chapel of the former monastery and the buildings of the present-day state-owned estate. The Bodenbach valley also opens up towards Schrecksbach. The view brings together the village and the valley, complementing the historic stops with a sense of the wider landscape.
Architectural history in Immichenhain
The former monastery church in Immichenhain was built in the Gothic style in the early 13th century. It retains wall paintings from the first half of the 14th century. Large 17th-century epitaphs reveal part of the family history of the Lords of Diede. The church thus brings together evidence from several centuries: its architecture, paintings and the memory of a family each offer a distinct perspective.
The baptismal font also draws attention to older design elements. Its round arches, ornaments and figures in the Romanesque style suggest that it is older than the church itself. This is an inference based on its features, not a definitive date. Visitors interested in architecture can see in this detail how a single object may point to a different period than the church building.
Steinmühle Mill Museum and local refreshments
The Steinmühle Mill Museum is in Ottrau-Schorbach, right next to the railway cycle path. The museum includes an outdoor area, a sawmill and a water wheel. Each feature illustrates a different aspect of milling technology: the sawmill points to wood processing, while the water wheel shows how water power was used. By prior arrangement, the museum can offer coffee and “Schwälmer Blechkuchen” (a regional sheet cake) or a hearty sausage snack. If you would like to include this in your plans, arrange it in advance.
Choosing a holiday apartment to suit your interests
When looking for a holiday apartment in Ottrau, the different experiences can help you choose a location. The route, just under ten kilometres long, offers a combination of boundary history and nature; the monastery church brings together architecture and historical artefacts in one place. The mill museum adds a sawmill, water wheel and the option of refreshments by prior arrangement. Consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay, then compare the specific location of an accommodation with the destinations that matter to you. This way, your choice of location is guided by your interests, rather than treating nature, history and milling technology as interchangeable.
