The Hessenturm stands on the 475 m-high Niedensteiner Kopf; the town’s history also includes the prehistoric hilltop settlement of Altenburg, the history of the town and the Jewish community. A hiking destination with far-reaching views
The N1 hiking trail is designed as a family trail and leads to the town’s landmark, the Hessenturm viewpoint. The tower stands on the 475 m-high Niedensteiner Kopf; from there, the view stretches far across the Chattengau. The trail thus combines a clearly defined destination with views over the landscape. The Hessenturm and its viewing platform are open from Easter until the end of October.
Two easy circular walks offer another way to plan your outings: the Hessenturm Loop (Nature Park Circular Trail 1) is 1.90 km long, while the “Around the Niedensteiner Kopf” loop (Nature Park Circular Trail 2) is 1.92 km. With a difference of just 0.02 km, the two routes are almost the same length. You can therefore choose between them based more on their names than on distance.
Altenburg and Niedenstein’s history
Altenburg is a prehistoric hilltop settlement within the municipality of Niedenstein. The Altenburg-Falkenstein Archaeology Eco Path follows route N6 to Altenburg and around the settlement site. At the Altenburg Museum, replicas offer an initial impression of the finds from Altenburg. The museums also explore the subject: the Altenburg and Niedenstein Town Museum provides information in three sections about Altenburg, the town’s history and the Jewish community. Together, these themes span a period from archaeological finds to the history of the town and its Jewish community.
A thousand-year-old dancing linden tree, designated a natural monument, stands in front of the Wichdorfer Gate. It adds another distinctive feature to Niedenstein’s historic highlights.
Cycling and a weather-dependent winter option
For cycling travellers, the long-distance cycle route R12 offers another point of interest: it passes through Kirchberg, a district of Niedenstein. The R12 and the hiking trails offer different ways to explore the surrounding area.
When weather conditions are suitable, the Ermetheis Ski Club prepares the ski slope below the Hessenturm for alpine skiing. This option depends on the weather and is not something to rely on when planning every stay.
