Treysa: Totenkirche, town wall and old town

The ruins of the Totenkirche (St. Martin’s Church) are Treysa’s landmark. The building dates from the 12th/13th century and stands at the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. A section of the town wall behind the ruins is still fairly well preserved; from there, you can enjoy views across the entire Schwalm valley and towards the Knüll Mountains. This historic site brings together architectural history and expansive views of the landscape.

The historic old-town area includes the market square, the historic town hall and the Johannisbrunnen fountain; it is surrounded by a group of half-timbered buildings. Rommershausen adds its own half-timbered character: many noteworthy half-timbered houses remain in the old village centre. These distinct townscapes give the city’s history more than one setting.

Ziegenhain: Tour through the moated fortress

A tour through the historic area of the old moated fortress in Ziegenhain passes the Steinerne Haus, the Alte Wache, the Lüdertor, the Schlosskirche, the Kugelkeller and the Rosengarten. These stops make the fortress area a distinct focus alongside the buildings and viewpoint in Treysa.

In the wider travel destination of Schwalm-Eder-Kreis, the Museum of the Schwalm in Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain complements a visit to the moated fortress. A reconstructed pottery workshop displays ceramics and pottery that were commonly used in the region. The museum also houses a large model of the moated fortress of Ziegenhain, showing its condition in 1761 after the bombardment during the Seven Years’ War.

Hiking and cycling trails as a distinct focus of your trip

There are numerous signposted hiking and cycling trails around Schwalmstadt. Through its local branches in Treysa and Ziegenhain, the Knüllgebirgsverein has developed a range of routes. One named cycling connection is the Bahnradweg in Rotkäppchenland: it runs from Schwalmstadt via Neukirchen, Oberaula and Kirchheim to Niederaula. While this route connects several places, the club’s routes offer another way to explore on foot or by bike.

Schwalm-Eder-Kreis includes the upland landscapes around the Knüll, Kellerwald and Habichtswald ranges. The Schwalm cycle path also offers a regional perspective: it is around 100 kilometres long and runs to the point where the Schwalm flows into the Eder, just before Felsberg in Schwalm-Eder-Kreis. For the most part, it follows paved or surfaced paths through river landscapes of meadows, fields, villages and small half-timbered towns.
