Church, Synod and Town History
The Protestant St. Mary's Town Church is a Gothic monument. Construction of the three-aisled hall church began around 1340. The Homberg Synod was held there in 1526, which is why the church is also known as the Reformation Church. This is a place where architectural history meets an important event in the history of the Reformation. A guided tour of the church tower involves climbing 217 steps. The tour also includes a visit to the historic tower keeper's apartment, where you can enjoy views across the town.
The New Gate is another historic landmark in Homberg/Efze: it is the town's only surviving town gate. Together with St. Mary's, it shows two distinct aspects of the historic townscape—the church as a Gothic building and the only preserved town gate.
Hohenburg Castle: Views, Well and Museum
Hohenburg Castle rises above Homberg/Efze on a basalt cone. From there, views extend to the Habichtswald, Knüll Nature Park and the forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. The castle well was once excavated 150 metres into the basalt, making it one of the deepest wells in Germany. A lighting system and an automatic water feature illustrate its depth.
The Hohenburg Museum displays 7,000 exhibits from various periods in the castle's history. The permanent exhibition covers the reconstruction of the castle, its history up to its destruction in the Thirty Years' War, the construction and clearing of the castle well, and life at the castle. Alongside the views, the focus is therefore also on the castle's architecture, well and life within its walls.
Hiking Trails with Different Profiles
Lochbach Gorge, between Wallenstein and Homberg-Hülsa, can be explored along a path on both sides of the stream, crossing boardwalks and bridges. The route is 1.3 kilometres long; there are benches and picnic spots along the way. Its length, the course of the stream and the places to rest give you practical information for planning this hike.
Another hiking option is the Lochbach Trail. Following successful recertification, it is officially certified as a premium hiking trail. The documented starting point is in Homberg-Hülsa; the route is not limited to Homberg's town centre. The two Lochbach names therefore indicate different planning details: for the gorge, the length and places to rest are specified; for the Lochbach Trail, the certification, starting point in Homberg-Hülsa and route extending beyond Homberg's town centre are specified.
