Felsburg Castle and Altenburg

In the town centre, Felsburg Castle stands on a rugged basalt cone. The oldest parts of the surviving castle ruins are thought to date from the 11th century. The tower’s dimensions are also easy to picture: it has a circumference of around 30 metres and is about the same height. The approximate date and the surviving remains give the site its historical significance; the measurements make the scale of the tower tangible.

Altenburg is a distinctive landmark in its own right: it rises where the Schwalm flows into the Eder. Felsberg thus brings together two different features—the castle on the basalt cone and the river landscape at the confluence.

Hiking trails with different focuses

For a hike around the Altenburger Feld, the F2 circular trail starts at Berliner Platz in Felsberg and is about 8 kilometres long. Archaeological Trail 2, “Ice Age Hunters,” is approximately 8.6 kilometres long; the stated starting points are Felsberg-Gensungen railway station or the Gensungen Museum. Archaeological Trail 4, “8,000 Years of Agriculture,” is about 10.8 kilometres long and first leads through Gensungen into the Sunderbach valley. Based on the stated distances, the F2 is the shortest of these three options. The different starting points and lengths help you choose a route that suits your preferred trail.

Along the archaeological trails, information boards explain prehistoric and early historical finds. This combines walking with discovery: rather than focusing only on the route, the boards draw attention to the finds and their early history.

The ARS NATURA art trail along the Barbarossaweg offers a different focus, combining art and hiking. The route runs from Spangenberg/Schnellrode via Melsungen, Felsberg and Fritzlar to Bad Zwesten. Gardens and viticulture as other local highlights

The rhododendron garden in Felsberg contains around 200 rhododendrons and azaleas. They bloom at different times, so they do not all flower at once. For the most part, it runs along paved or surfaced paths through river landscapes with meadows, fields, villages and half-timbered towns.
