Discover Wabern on the Memorial Trail

The Wabern Memorial Trail takes you past sculptures by various artists on a walking tour through the town. Sixteen information boards provide details and pictures about Wabern’s past, its residents and their daily working lives, as well as notable buildings and prominent figures. The trail thus combines art in public spaces with local history and personal insights into earlier ways of life and work.

If you enjoy taking a closer look at a place’s history, the boards offer several themes to guide your walk: everyday life, buildings and influential figures. The sculptures add a distinct element. The memorial trail and cycling routes appeal to different interests, so when planning you can consider whether to spend more time on a walking tour or a longer route.

Cycling Routes Through Wabern

The Eder Cycle Route is 171 kilometres long in total and passes through Wabern. The Schwalm Cycle Route, around 100 kilometres long, follows the Schwalm River and continues through Wabern to Felsberg. The total lengths give you a first idea of the scale of the two routes: the Eder Cycle Route is longer, while the Schwalm Cycle Route follows the river and offers a distinct connection to the landscape.

In the Schwalm-Eder district, the Schwalm Cycle Route runs mostly along asphalted or surfaced paths through river landscapes with meadows, fields, villages and half-timbered towns. The Felsberg-Gensungen and Schwalmstadt-Treysa rail connections are listed for travelling to this route. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date.

More Local Attractions

A skate park is located at Reiherwaldweg 6, next to the ice rink and sports grounds. It is listed as an amenity for children, young people and families. If the skate park is important to your plans, check the current conditions of use before visiting.

Wabern’s Eder floodplains also have a historical connection to storks: a nest was built there in 1996 to encourage the birds to settle.

The Wider Destination: Schwalm-Eder District

The Schwalm-Eder district offers a range of landscapes, from the low mountain ranges around the Knüll, Kellerwald and Habichtswald to the river landscapes along the Schwalm Cycle Route. Another cycling option is the Steinkammergrabrunde near Fritzlar-Lohne: this easy circular route is 4.90 kilometres long and is designated Nature Park Circular Route L1.

Several museums offer cultural insights into a range of topics. The Malerstübchen Museum in Willingshausen explores the art history of the 19th and 20th centuries and displays paintings featuring motifs of the Schwalm traditional costume. It also exhibits traditional rural crafts from the Schwalm, whitework embroidery, and knitting and spinning work. Expert-led tours include talks about the artists’ colony and its artists, Schwalm customs and traditional crafts.

The Schwalm Museum in Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain displays ceramics and pottery traditionally used in the region in a reconstructed pottery workshop. The museum also features a large model of the Ziegenhain water fortress, showing its condition in 1761 after it was shelled during the Seven Years’ War. A permanent exhibition in the tithe barn at the Breitenau Memorial commemorates events of the Nazi era; the memorial’s educational programme includes guided tours, walks, lectures and readings.

The Schlossbrunnenweg also offers a historical highlight: it passes a spring-fed pond on the way to the castle well, which once supplied fresh water to Wallenstein Castle.
