Haydau Monastery and its garden
Haydau Monastery was founded in 1235. In the 14th century, it developed into an economic center in the Fulda Valley; during the Landgraves’ era, the complex was converted into a palace. The garden complex also tells the story of the site’s transformation. From 1685, a Baroque garden with terraces, parterres and a high enclosing wall was created around the former monastery and later Landgrave’s palace under Landgrave Karl. An elaborate staircase with artificial grotto architecture has been preserved in the palace park; it is considered a special attraction of the Haydau garden. The historic garden was restored in 2005 and is maintained through the voluntary efforts of local residents. During its opening hours, the monastery café in the monastery’s south wing serves cakes and tray bakes.
Exploring on foot and by bike
The Haydau Pilgrims’ Trail starts at the monastery church, runs through the Fulda Valley to Kapellenberg and continues to Altmorschen. The trail is described as offering far-reaching views and the charm of Altmorschen, a half-timbered village. Much of the route is flat and well surfaced, making it easy to manage in any weather. This may be useful when planning your day if you prefer a route with longer flat sections. The pilgrims’ trail offers a different perspective on the area from the historical sites at the monastery and garden.
On the Fulda Cycle Route R1 between Morschen-Binsförth and Malsfeld-Beiseförth, cyclists and pedestrians can cross the approximately 40-meter-wide Fulda using a cable ferry that is about 50 meters long. Half-timbered houses, local history and discoveries
In Neumorschen, an open water channel runs along part of the historically significant Marktstraße. It fits in with the very well-preserved buildings with their half-timbered houses. Also in Neumorschen are the Jacobi Church, renovated in 2008, and its surroundings, which were designed by the village community and offer another reason to visit. The local history museum in Wichte also includes a weaving room in its exhibition. The Jewish cemetery in Binsförth, in the municipality of Morschen, is the oldest Jewish burial ground in northern Hesse. These places offer different ways to explore local and cultural history, from traditional crafts to the history of Jewish life in northern Hesse.
For another culinary break, the monastery café serves cakes and tray bakes, provided it is open. Opening hours are relevant when planning a visit to the café; specific times are not given here.
