Maspujols – Nature, Trails and Cultural Heritage

Maspujols lies at the foot of the Serra de la Mussara on the banks of the Riera de Maspujols, precisely where it joins the Riera Solviana or del Solvià. The highest point in the municipality is the 542-metre-high Rocabruna, locally known as La Feredat.

Nature and Trails

The Maspujols health-route network consists of circular routes starting and ending at Avinguda del Poliesportiu. They can be walked; according to their respective markings, some routes are also suitable for cycling. Route 2, “La Bessona”, is 3.74 km long, has 92 m of positive elevation gain, is classified as easy and takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. The route type, markings and duration provide several points of comparison for planning your day.

At the upper end of a ravine lies the Font de la Bessona, surrounded by nature. The “La Bessona” route leads to this destination, which is considered a historic and cultural monument. The Font de la Bessona is once again regarded as a suitable place for walking and enjoying nature; for centuries, it was a meeting place for the residents of Maspujols. The Centre Excursionista de Maspujols organises a hike open to everyone every month.

The Ermita de Sant Antoni de Pàdua stands on a small hill 237 metres high, directly next to the town centre. At Plaça de l’Oli and behind the hermitage, there are outdoor facilities for health exercises installed in the public space. The combination of circular routes, health exercises and an open hike can be viewed as a sequence of different activity formats.

Culture and History

Cal Pujol is the first house in the municipality and gave Maspujols its name. The first documented mention of Cal Pujol dates from 1305. The house is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia and protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest. Cal Po is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It is an eclectic residential building from the 19th century. The Pont de la Via was completed in 1890 and was known in contemporary newspapers as “el puente de los siete arcos”.

The olive oil produced in Maspujols belongs to the Siurana Protected Designation of Origin, which is recognised for its quality.
