L'Ampolla in the Ebro Delta: Coast, Nature and Oyster Farming

L'Ampolla is located at the entrance to Fangar's natural harbor and is considered the gateway to the Ebro Delta.

Landscape and Coast

Bassa de les Olles is directly connected to the sea and surrounded by rice fields. The seabed off L'Ampolla includes part of one of the most significant Posidonia colonies on the Mediterranean coast. Platja Avellanes beach is located near L'Ampolla. Playa L'Ampolla beach is located near L'Ampolla. Platja Cap Roig beach is located near L'Ampolla. Platja Perelló beach is located near L'Ampolla.

Coastal Paths and Rice Fields

The “Els Ocells i l’Arròs” route runs through a protected area of the Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The coastal route “Els penya-segats que van vestir-se de colors” begins in L'Ampolla, follows the GR 92 and heads toward L’Ametlla de Mar as far as Cala de l’Àliga. The route passes through rocky sections. It runs along small pebble coves. The route follows reddish cliffs. The route runs alongside pine forests and the sea. Its landscape therefore includes rocky sections, small pebble coves, reddish cliffs, pine forests and the sea; these features accompany the route between L'Ampolla and Cala de l’Àliga toward L’Ametlla de Mar.

History and Culture

The “Les basses naturals” route focuses on clay basins that are part of L'Ampolla's history and customs. The clay basins were created by people and served as watering places for animals. In the wider regional surroundings of L'Ampolla stands Castell de Sant Jordi d'Alfama. The Castle of Sant Joan / Suda is also located in the wider regional surroundings of L'Ampolla. The Centre d'Interpretació de la Setmana Santa museum is located in the wider regional surroundings of L'Ampolla. The Palau Episcopal museum is located in the wider regional surroundings of L'Ampolla. A bronze commemorative sculpture known as “el guerrer” was donated to L'Ampolla by the French government in gratitude for assistance provided.

Rice, Sake and Oysters

Kan Kensho offers tours, workshops, excursions to rice fields and tastings focused on sake, koji and the rice culture of the Ebro Delta. Advance reservation is required. The oyster of L'Ampolla is one of the hallmarks of the local gastronomy. Its distinctive flavor is attributed to nutrients from the mixture of Mediterranean salt water and fresh water from the Ebro. The Diada de l’Ostra takes place on a Sunday in May. It includes a tasting of oysters from the Ebro Delta as well as a demonstration of oyster preparation.
