La Sénia: Olive Groves, Old Town and History

La Sénia reveals its special features in two very different ways. The Centre d’Aviació Històrica de la Sénia is an aviation museum that displays various aviation objects from that period. Alongside it, the typical landscape of the plain of la Sénia is shaped by an immense expanse of olive trees resembling a sea; ancient olive trees dating back thousands of years can also be visited along signposted paths. For personal planning, culture and landscape can be considered separately or deliberately combined.

Other destinations for your travel planning: La Torre De Fontaubella, Alforja, Sant Jaume Dels Domenys, Vespella De Gaià, L'aldea, Aiguamúrcia-Santes Creus, Riudecanyes and El Lligallo Del Gànguil.

Culture

The Molí la Vella is a building with more than 900 years of history. The medieval settlement charter of la Sénia dates from 1232; archaeological evidence also attests to prehistoric settlement at this site. The oldest settlement area of la Sénia is connected with the roads that converged near the Sénia River to lead into the Els Ports area. During the Spanish Civil War, the government of the Second Spanish Republic planned the Camp d’Aviació de la Sénia as one of several military airfields in Catalonia.

The historical points of interest differ considerably in period, function and appearance; when planning your day, you can focus on architectural history, early settlement or aviation.

Landscape

Along the section of the Sénia River that runs through the municipality of la Sénia, it is bordered by dense riverside woodland. The defensive location of the old town of la Sénia beside a rocky escarpment almost 60 metres deep, situated on the Sénia River, offers views of the surrounding natural landscape.

The open plain, the riverside woodland and the view from the old town represent three clearly different landscape impressions that can be weighted separately when planning.

Festivals and Cuisine

The Diada del Recapte takes place on the Monday closest to 9 May. It includes a communal meal at which the dishes typical of la Sénia, olla de recapte and pastisset, are served. The Fira Gastronòmica de la Sénia takes place on the weekend associated with the Festa de Sant Gregori; this is celebrated on the Monday closest to the 9th. The Festes Majors de la Sénia last ten days and take place in the second half of August; Sant Bartomeu and Sant Roc are honoured. The Festes Majors de la Sénia include horse races at the Pla de Roquillo racetrack.

For the calendar, the information about a single Monday, an associated festival weekend and a ten-day August event helps distinguish the events by date.
