Vespella De Gaià: Castle, Valley Views and Sculpture Park

The historic centre of Vespella de Gaià contains a small group of medieval houses clustered around the former castle and the Church of Sant Miquel. Some houses have been restored, while others are falling into disrepair; from here, there are views over the Gaià Valley. The Sculpture Park of Vespella de Gaià is a freely accessible museum where works by contemporary artists are permanently exhibited.

Different layers of history therefore meet in the historic centre: medieval buildings, the former castle and the Church of Sant Miquel stand alongside houses in varying states of preservation. The sculpture park complements this historic setting with permanently exhibited contemporary art.

Culture

Castell de Vespella was probably founded in the 11th century. Its first documented mentions date from the 12th century. A traditional rural building has a round-arched portal with a keystone. This keystone is dated 16 March 1739. The building's additions include a chapel and a storage building.

The date on the keystone also makes the building readable as an individual detail of the villagescape. The round-arched portal, chapel and storage building all belong to the same traditional rural building and add a later-dated architectural detail to the history of the castle.

Nature

Vespella de Gaià is situated on a 191-metre-high hill. This hill offers views over the lower course of the Gaià. The Gaià River forms the western natural boundary of Vespella de Gaià. Between the Gaià Massif and the Serra de Montferri, it shapes unusual valley landscapes.

The landscape is therefore shaped both by the elevated historic centre and by the river course. The view from the hill and the valley landscapes between the Gaià Massif and the Serra de Montferri offer two different perspectives on the same surroundings.

A section of the Torrent de Vespella lies within the Espai Natural riu Gaià Natura 2000 site. This area is designated as a ZEPA site for the special protection of birds. Along the Torrent de Vespella, there are several pools and ponds that contain water almost permanently. They support habitats and biodiversity.

The pools and ponds are specific landscape features along the stream. Together with the designated protection function of the Espai Natural riu Gaià, they highlight the nature-oriented character of this section.

Paths

A path leads along the hill from the car park in the historic centre of Vespella. It extends to Castell de Vespella. The Camí del Torrent de Vespella begins at a viewpoint at Mas de les Aluges. It runs as far as the sports grounds. The route is approximately 2.1 kilometres long. The path is easy to walk.

The two paths start at different points: the path from the car park connects the historic centre with the castle, while the Camí del Torrent de Vespella begins at the viewpoint near Mas de les Aluges and ends at the sports grounds. Thus, both the hill and the Torrent are part of the described network of paths.

Festivals and Cuisine

Vedellada popular uses veal from Tarragonès. The animal is raised at the Mas d'en Mestre farm in the municipality of Vespella de Gaià. Vedellada popular takes place in Vespella on the first Saturday in May. The Festa Major de Sant Miquel takes place on 29 September. It includes several festive events.

The two dates bring together regional cuisine and the local festival calendar: Vedellada popular is associated with veal from Tarragonès and the Mas d'en Mestre farm, while the Festa Major de Sant Miquel on 29 September includes several events.
