Masos De Vespella: Art, Village Centre and Nature

Culture

The Vespella art route begins in Els Masos de Vespella. At the entrance to Els Masos de Vespella is “El Pas de la Memòria”, a sculptural ensemble by Joan Simó. The Museu d'Instal·lacions Artístiques de Vespella de Gaià comprises sixteen sculptures distributed throughout the municipality. As you walk through the streets of Vespella and Els Masos, you can look out for works by the Museu d'Instal·lacions Artístiques de Vespella de Gaià. The route combines different forms of public art: an ensemble at the entrance to the village, individual sculptures throughout the municipality and works that can be discovered in the streets of Vespella and Els Masos.

Villagescape and History

Between the houses of Els Masos de Vespella there is a public ceramic fountain. The fountain bears the signatures of Martí Royo and Rafael Bartolozzi. The centre of Masos de Vespella consists of a harmonious group of houses. Some of these houses date back to the 19th century. Mas d'en Plana, a rural building, is located near the centre of Masos de Vespella. Mas d'en Plana is uninhabited and dates from the 18th century. The Festival de Músiques Especials Sant Miquel de Vespella has been held since 1994. Thus, the villagescape includes buildings from two centuries alongside a public fountain and a festival that has continued since 1994.

Paths and Location

The Camí del Torrent de Vespella is located in the municipality of Vespella de Gaià and is laid out as a circular route. You cover 2,100 metres on a route of low difficulty. One path leads to Masos de Vespella and then to the ruins of Castell de Sant Miquel. A Romanesque church stands above the ruins of Castell de Sant Miquel. The TV-2021 is the municipality's most important road connection. It connects Vespella de Gaià with the T-202 road at the entrance to La Nou de Gaià. Els Masos de Vespella lies halfway between the village of Vespella and La Nou de Gaià. In the sequence of the route, Masos de Vespella comes before the castle ruins; the Romanesque church is explicitly located above the ruins. The TV-2021 also describes the higher-level connection across the municipal area: it leads to the T-202 at the entrance to La Nou de Gaià, while Els Masos lies between Vespella and La Nou.

Nature

A section of the Torrent de Vespella lies within the Riu Gaià Natura 2000 site. This section is classified as a ZEPA, meaning a special protection area for birds. Protected European pond turtles live in parts of the Torrent de Vespella between Salomó and Vespella de Gaià.
