Discover Riudecanyes: Pantà, Escornalbou and olive oil

Riudecanyes is located inland in the Costa Daurada. Its municipal area rises through the Serra de l’Argentera and forms a viewpoint over large parts of the Camp region.

Water and landscape

The Pantà de Riudecanyes is a place for walks and enjoying the surrounding landscape.

Swimming is permitted in the Pantà de Riudecanyes; visitors can enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking and pedal boating there.

The Pantà de Riudecanyes is easily accessible and has a car park. From there, a picnic area can be reached in ten minutes.

Culture

The Castell Monestir de Sant Miquel d’Escornalbou dates from the late 12th and early 13th centuries.

The Escornalbou complex includes a Romanesque church, the remains of the chapter house, a cloister and the carefully reconstructed manor house of Sr. Toda from the early 20th century.

The Ermita de Santa Bàrbara is located at the summit of the Escornalbou complex and offers views over the comarques of Tarragona.

The Església de Sant Mateu de Riudecanyes was built in 1582 as a Renaissance church made of stone and mortar.

The Sant Mateu church has a 20-metre-high, two-section bell tower and a clock built in 1845.

The Centre d’Interpretació dels Fruits del Paisatge was established in the former building and mill of the Cooperativa de Riudecanyes. It presents the landscape, history and traditions of the inland Costa Daurada and Baix Camp.

The Centre d’Interpretació dels Fruits del Paisatge uses audiovisual media, display panels and interactive games to present the landscapes of the Muntanyes de la Costa Daurada and the quality products they produce.

In Riudecanyes, visitors can see several centuries-old olive trees of the Arbequina variety.

Routes

The Ruta per la Baronia d’Escornalbou is a guided tour that begins at the Castell Monestir de Sant Miquel d’Escornalbou.

The Ruta per la Baronia d’Escornalbou includes a stop at the Riudecanyes reservoir, followed by a visit to the village and its interpretation centre.

The Camí dels Molins leads back towards Riudecanyes; its information panels identify the village’s flour, rice and sulphur mills.

Traditions

The “Viure la Terra” route is an oleotourism route focusing on olive cultivation and the characteristics of olives and olive oil.

The oleotourism offering in Riudecanyes includes a guided walk among centuries-old olive trees, a visit to the Centre d’Interpretació dels Fruits del Paisatge and a tasting of Escornalbou extra virgin olive oil.

On the Saturday before Holy Week, Riudecanyes hosts the Fira Tastaverd, the Fira dels Sentits. It focuses on organic and natural products, crafts and traditional trades, and is accompanied by folk music and Castells.
