Sant Carles de la Ràpita: Delta, Harbour and Maritime History

The extensive Badia dels Alfacs is one of the most distinctive areas of the Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre and is protected by the la Banya peninsula.

Water and maritime experiences

The Passeig marítim begins at the extensive, green Parc de Garbí by the marina, runs along the beaches, crosses a bridge over the water and goes around the old lighthouse. It is reserved exclusively for pedestrians, cyclists and people engaged in sports.

Maritime routes along the Badia dels Alfacs depart from the tourist boat landing stage in La Ràpita. Leisure sailing is possible in the Badia dels Alfacs on safe, calm waters with little swell. Paddleboarding can be enjoyed all year round, not just during the summer months. In La Ràpita, several companies offer guided paddleboarding tours or paddleboard hire.

Nature and viewpoints

The Erms de Vilacoto in the municipality of Sant Carles de la Ràpita include two important springs: Mal Morta and Tronc. The Mirador de la Guardiola offers panoramic views of the Ebro Delta, the Badia dels Alfacs and the town of Sant Carles de la Ràpita. The Torre de la Guardiola has been documented since 1483.

Culture and history

The Museu de la Mar de l’Ebre is housed in the former offices of the Real Compañía de Canalización del Ebro, a neoclassical building constructed in 1857 and designed by Jules Carvallo. It features two permanent exhibitions about marine biodiversity, the importance and dangers of navigation, and coastal life around the mouth of the Ebro.

The Museu de la Mar de l’Ebre is open from Wednesday to Sunday: from October to June, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and in June, July and August, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

L’Església Nova forms part of the neoclassical urban development that Carles III planned beside the port of dels Alfacs. The royal town associated with L’Església Nova was founded on 6 November 1780. The Far de la Ràpita began operating on 1 November 1864 to facilitate navigation at the entrance to the port of dels Alfacs.

The Far de la Ràpita cannot be visited inside; its surroundings on the Passeig marítim are suitable for quiet walks and sunset photography.

Cuisine

At the Port de pescadors i llotja, you can watch the direct sale of fish in the fishing harbour and fish market complex from a corridor on the first floor overlooking the buyers’ stands.

The Ruta de les Muscleres runs from the port of La Ràpita to the mussel farms in the Badia dels Alfacs. It includes a tasting of mussels, oysters and other seafood, as well as explanations of the mussel and oyster production process.
