La Fatarella between the Old Town, Dry Landscape and Olive Oil

La Fatarella presents a townscape in which history is immediately visible in the structure of the Old Town: it consists of narrow, winding streets within the former walls and is characterized by covered sections of street known as Perxes.

Culture and History

One striking detail is the Perxe de ca Felip: the covered passage consists of three stone arches and covers a floor area of 54 m². The Església de Sant Andreu is another distinctive part of the historic townscape. Construction began in 1628, and the church was completed in 1769. Inside, it combines a Renaissance style with Late Gothic elements in the vault; the main façade is Baroque.

The Memorial de les Camposines is located in the les Camposines area of La Fatarella. Les Devees was a rear position in La Fatarella’s defensive network; the surviving shelter was built by soldiers as a refuge and sleeping quarters. A zigzag section of a trench is still visible above the shelter. The CI Internacionals a l’Ebre shows how the involvement of other countries influenced both sides in the Battle of the Ebro.

Landscape and Trails

La Fatarella’s agricultural dry landscape is characterized by dry-stone walls and includes field boundaries, huts, mills and water wheels. The local version of the Ruta de la Pau begins and ends in La Fatarella. The Old Town, dry landscape and historic sites each offer different focal points that can be considered separately when planning.

Experiences and Events

L’Or de la Fatarella is a playful experience in the Old Town in which visitors solve eight puzzles. This QR code-guided cultural game is offered in Catalan, Spanish, English and French and is aimed especially at families. The story takes place in the year 1374 and revolves around the search for a treasure kept in La Fatarella by a royal chaplain.

The Romeria de Sant Francisco takes place every year on the first Saturday after Easter. It begins as a procession from La Fatarella to the Ermita de Sant Francisco, 12 km away.

Local Products

Coca d’avellana is considered La Fatarella’s signature cake. The Festa de l’Oli is a fair for extra virgin olive oil, particularly the Empeltre variety characteristic of the region; at the same time, it promotes local products. Extra virgin olive oil is produced in La Fatarella, made mainly from Empeltre olives and, to a significant extent, Arbequina olives, and falls under the DOP Oli de Terra Alta.
