Vinyols: Culture, Festivals and Catalan Tradition
Culture and Local History
The main centre of Vinyols i els Arcs is Plaça de la Vila, also known as el Replà. The castle and parish church once stood on this square; today, it is home to the parish church and town hall.
The town centre therefore combines current municipal functions with historical traces: the town hall is part of the present-day buildings, while the castle and former parish church belong to the history of the square.
In the municipal area of Vinyols i els Arcs, north of the new road between Salou and Cambrils, there are remains of what may have been Castell dels Arcs. At La Fontcoberta stands a medieval covered spring, which may be the only surviving architectural evidence of Castell dels Arcs.
Cal Nicolau, also known as Casa de Donya Blanca, is protected as a cultural asset of local interest. Cal Nicolau was built at the beginning of the 18th century over older buildings that belonged to the Folc family. The two names refer to the same building, linking its current name with its earlier architectural history.
The present parish church, Església de Santa Caterina, was built between 1770 and 1778 over an earlier temple. The defensive tower connected to Casa de la Vila is well preserved and was built in 1560 by Francesc Torrell i Pradell.
Casa Torrell was probably built by the Torrell family towards the end of the 16th century. Casa Torrell is structurally connected to a defensive tower.
Festivals and Regional Cuisine
The Festa Major de Sant Joan is Vinyols i els Arcs’ summer festival dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. A bonfire is part of the celebrations on the eve; on 24 June, cultural, sporting and religious events take place. The festival therefore combines an established eve tradition with a day of events covering three different areas.
The Diada de la Samfaina takes place as part of the Festa Major de Sant Joan. It is dedicated to samfaina, a Catalan sauce made from seasonal vegetables and regional products.
The Festa Major de Santa Caterina includes a tasting of Caterineta, a drink typical of Vinyols. This Festa Major opens with the Vinyartia arts and crafts fair.
Agriculture and the Yearly Cycle
Vinyols i els Arcs is a municipality with a strong agricultural character. Its main crops include peaches, hazelnuts and olives. These three products form part of the municipality’s agricultural profile as described.
The Marató per Relleus has been organised in Vinyols i els Arcs since 2016 and takes place in September.
