Discover Conesa: Defensive Wall, Churches and Trails

The historic centre of Conesa was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest (Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional) by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2011. Medieval Conesa is enclosed by a defensive wall with two gateways. The medieval settlement follows a circular settlement model along the contours; the castle is located at the highest point.

Culture

The Church of Santa Maria, a Gothic building dating from 1335 to 1347, forms part of the historic townscape. The Portal de Santa Maria dates from the 14th century and was incorporated into the town wall between the del Gomà and del Ferrer towers; the del Ferrer tower was demolished. The former communal bread oven Forn de Pa – Ajuntament houses a small museum with everyday tools from the last century and operated until 1924. The Ermita de Sant Antoni was built as a church and apparently served as a hospital during times of infectious disease; a document from 1297 already mentions it. The Church of Sant Pere is a Romanesque building from the late 12th century on a small hill and was declared a historical-artistic monument in 1977.

The annual calendar also has its own highlights: in April, it includes a communal Cassola-de-tros meal. The Mercat Vell de Conesa is scheduled for the first Saturday in August. A mountain race and a popular hike are scheduled for the last Sunday in September.

Conesa lies between two streams whose waters flow towards the Vall del Corb. The surrounding area includes forests with pine, oak, beech and maple trees. Next to Conesa lies the Espai Natural de les Obagues del Riu Corb (EPN) natural area.

The municipality of Conesa has several routes for hiking and mountain biking. The Camí d’hivern de Conesa leads to the remains of the former settlement of Torlanda through wooded areas and agricultural fields.
