La Galera: Ceramics, History and Landscape

Since the 18th century, earthenware vessels made by potters have been produced in La Galera. In the first exhibition room of Terracota, Centre d'Interpretació de la Terrissa de la Galera, visitors can learn step by step how a piece of pottery is made using traditional and modern methods. The second room of Terracota is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of painting, sculpture, handicrafts, ceramics and history. Argila, Fira de la Terrissa de la Galera, is a recurring pottery and ceramics fair in La Galera.

Opening hours

Terracota is open all year round from Wednesday to Friday from 09:30 to 13:30, as well as on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 12:00 to 14:00; visits outside these times can be arranged. The stated time slots distinguish between weekdays and weekend or public holiday opening times; arrangements are possible outside these times. The themed tour La Terrissa i la Galera includes a visit to the town's last still-active pottery; the master potter demonstrates how a piece is made there.

Landscape

The Itinerari pel barranc de la Galera route leads to the centre of La Galera and to the old bridge over the Barranc de la Galera. The signposted Oliveres Mil.lenàries route runs through the municipalities of La Galera, Godall and Ulldecona. One starting point is at the roundabout on the access road to La Galera and Godall, and another is at the Quatre Carreteres junction near Ulldecona. With these two stated starting points, the route is anchored both at the access road near La Galera and Godall and at the junction near Ulldecona. The route passes through an agricultural landscape characterised by dry-farmed olive groves.

History

The Torre de la Galera was built as a defensive tower between 1340 and 1342. The Torre is therefore part of the town's history of fortification. The Pont sobre el Barranc de la Galera is probably considered a medieval, single-arch bridge with a semicircular arch.
