Siurana: Romanesque Architecture, Castle Ruins and Mountain Views

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa Maria is a fully preserved Romanesque building constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries.

Its portal is particularly rich in detail: it features a figuratively decorated tympanum framed by three round-arched arcades, which rest on columns with ornate capitals.

The Castillo Árabe was a military “hisn” built around the 9th century as a control centre. Its perimeter and defensive towers are clearly visible following an initial phase of restoration.

The Salto de la Reina Mora is a cliff associated with the legend of Abdelazia; at the edge of the precipice, a deep horseshoe print can be seen in the rock.
