Prat de Comte: Nature, Trails and Catalan Traditions
At the foot of the Els Ports mountain range lies Prat de Comte. Natural areas, trails, buildings and festivals offer different ways to experience the town. For your personal planning, you can consider these topics separately and then compare them with one another.
Landscape and Trails
La Refoia, Tossal d'Engrilló and Montsagres form one of the most significant landscape units in Els Ports Natural Park. The La Jepa valley is an interpretive area between the former Prat de Comte railway station and the Fontcalda sanctuary; it lies on the Canaletes River and the Via Verda.
The Via Verda through the La Jepa area is a former railway line that is now used as a tourist route for non-motorised vehicles. El Molí is an old mill in Prat de Comte that the municipality has equipped as a leisure facility. El Molí and La Refoia are connected by the long-distance GR-171 trail. On the GR-171, the hiking route is 7.3 km long, takes about 2 hours and has an elevation gain of 520 metres. Different trail characteristics such as distance, duration and elevation gain can be compared directly when planning your days outdoors.
Culture and Traditions
The parish church of Sant Bartomeu was built in the 17th century in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. After the Civil War, the church was rebuilt; its altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Fontcalda.
The Forn Morruno is a communal oven built in 1860 and subsequently restored. It is fired up during some annual festivals, when people come there to bake food.
At the Festa de l'Aiguardent, various aguardientes are tasted together with traditional sweets, including coquetes d'aiguardent and casquetes. During the Festa de l'Aiguardent, the whole town opens its doors to stills as well as various associations, traders and exhibitors. Residents invite visitors into their homes, which serve as special market stalls.
The traditional Cursa del Cresol is a race in which participants carry a burning oil lamp. Joan Amades mentioned it in his book on Catalan traditions as unique in Catalonia; the previous year, it was declared to be of comarcal interest.
