El Rourell – Culture, Trails and Holiday Apartments

The Castell del Rourell, also known as the Casal dels Marquesos de Vallgornera, is a freestanding stately building with a square floor plan, Gothic Coronelles windows and a portal with wedge-shaped voussoirs.

Culture

The Castell is thought to have originally dated from the 12th century. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and remodelled in the 19th century, giving it its present appearance. The parish church of Sant Pere del Rourell was built in the 17th century over an older church. Construction of the present building began in 1769 and was completed in 1777.

Sant Pere del Rourell has a single-nave layout with side chapels, a lunette vault and a simple façade. The bell tower has a square floor plan and an octagonal upper storey. The commandery of El Rourell is also part of the town’s history: it was part of the Templar organisation and was subordinate to the commandery of Barberà.

The Festa del Sagrat Cor is part of the festival tradition and is celebrated in El Rourell every ten years in October. Trails

On its route through the Camp de Tarragona between Valls and Reus, El Camí passes through El Rourell. Within El Rourell, the trail runs along Carrer de la Creu to Sant Pere Church and then to the Castell, also known as the Casal dels Marquesos de Vallgornera.

On this section through the town, El Camí crosses the Clot del Riuet and leaves the town via Carrer Major and Camí de la Granja. Those who connect the trail route with the town’s history can distinguish between the route extending beyond the town and the specifically named streets, buildings and bodies of water.

Landscape

The Francolí forms the eastern boundary of the municipality of El Rourell, while the Glorieta forms its southwestern boundary. The area of El Rourell is flat and almost entirely used for agriculture; more than two-thirds of the area is irrigated with water from the Francolí.

Boundary lines, irrigation and land use are separate spatial features. The T-722 offers another point of spatial orientation: it is the most important transport connection from El Rourell and connects Valls with El Morell via Vilallonga del Camp, El Rourell and La Masó.
