Poboleda: Vineyards, Siurana and Priorat Culture
Poboleda lies on the slope of a hill on the right bank of the Siurana River. To the north, the municipal area is characterised by the final foothills of the Montsant Massif; to the south, it extends across the north-western slopes of the Sierra del Molló.
Landscape
Walking trails along the Siurana River lead to the Font del Mingot. The Font del Mingot is a riverside area suitable for a picnic. There is a recreational area at the Ermita de Maria Assumpta. Priorat Route 14 reaches Poboleda at kilometre 7.35 and offers views of Montsant and large parts of the Priorat. For planning purposes, the trails, viewpoints and recreational areas can be treated as different elements of a day trip.
Wine and Cuisine
Mas Doix offers winery visits and walks through the vineyards with wine tasting. Mas Sinén offers a guided visit to the winery and vineyards, including wine tasting and views over the Priorat. Genium Celler organises tours lasting around one and a half hours, with a tasting of two wines and a look inside the barrel room. Terres de Vidalba offers visits through the vineyards with a tasting at the highest point of the estate. Poboleda's typical cuisine includes cocas, orejetas, romesco with escarole, almonds, hazelnuts and wine from the DOC Priorat. At Poboleda's wine festival and traditional old-style grape harvest festival, excursions into the vineyards, winery visits and various leisure activities are part of the programme; both festivals take place at the end of September. For personal day planning, the wine experiences therefore differ primarily in format and focus: some visits combine the winery and vineyard, while others complement the tasting with views or a look inside the barrel room. The approximately one-and-a-half-hour tour and the tasting of two wines also define a clearly stated timeframe and content. The festivals at the end of September, by contrast, provide a specific date for vineyards, wineries and leisure activities.
Culture and History
A walk through Poboleda reveals the portals of the manor houses on Carrer Major. The Church of Sant Pere Apòstol dates from the 18th century and, because of its large dimensions, is also known as the Cathedral of the Priorat. The Molí dels Frares, also called Molí Draper, lies west of Poboleda in the bed of the Siurana River. The Molí dels Frares was owned by the Cartuja de Escaladei. The mill was associated with a wool industry started by the monks of the Cartuja de Escaladei. Poboleda was where the monks lived while the Cartuja de Escaladei was being built.
