Masboquera between valley paths and Catalan village history

Nature and paths

Masboquera lies at an altitude of 230 m in the interior of the valley of the Llastres River. Its location in the valley shapes the village’s landscape and connects its local history with a network of paths that begins directly in Masboquera. Several hiking routes start here, including the Rutas de las Fuentes. Their sections can be covered on foot, by mountain bike, or in some cases by car. For hiking routes, it is advisable to check the latest information on trail conditions before setting out.

The Rutas de las Fuentes can therefore be incorporated into a stay in different ways: some sections are intended for walking, others can be ridden by mountain bike, while certain stretches can also be covered by car. This keeps each specific route connected to its respective mode of transport without mixing the different options together.

Geographical setting

Masboquera lies east of Vandellòs on the road to l’Hospitalet de l'Infant. Together with Masriudoms and Vandellòs, Masboquera forms the Vall de Llors. The village’s location and its setting within this valley are therefore just as much part of the destination’s character as the paths leading from Masboquera into the surrounding landscape.

History and village character

Masboquera developed from a mas, around which a cluster of houses formed. This history is reflected in the village’s character, with its houses and central area. Most of the houses have been restored. The Torre de les Hores is located in the centre and is one of Masboquera’s distinctive architectural features.

The village character also includes a bell tower with a clock and a gable made of exposed brick. The Torre de les Hores and the bell tower represent different visible elements within the village: here, a named building in the centre; there, a tower with a clock and an exposed-brick gable. Both features form part of Masboquera’s architectural appearance.

Festa Major

In November, the residents of Masboquera celebrate the Festa Major in honour of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. The traditional programme includes a procession with the municipal music band Clau de Vent, a tribute to the village’s older residents, a Correfoc with the Colla de Diables de Vandellòs, and a parade with the Capgrossos de Vandellòs.

The individual programme items combine religious remembrance, musical accompaniment, a tribute within the local community, and two processions involving different groups. For the Festa Major, event dates and times should be checked before travelling. The November date is part of the festival’s established framework, while the procession, Correfoc, and parade remain separate elements of the traditional programme.
