La Morera de Montsant is located within the protected Parc Natural de la Serra de Montsant and below the cliff face of the Sierra Mayor de Montsant.

Geographical location

From Cornudella, La Morera de Montsant can be reached via the TV-701 road. From the village, the Grau de Salfores or the Grau de la Grallera lead towards Piló dels Senyalets. The road, mountain passes and destination therefore constitute different names within the local trail network. The two directions can be considered separately when exploring the surroundings through their named connections.

Nature and trails

The Itinerari La Carrerada is a low-difficulty hiking route. The trail is 2 km long, takes approximately 60 minutes and has a total elevation difference of 115 m. The El Bosc de Bonrepòs circular route covers 5.10 km, has an elevation difference of 245 m and takes 2 hours 15 minutes. The differences are clear from the distance, duration and elevation difference alone: La Carrerada represents the shorter route with the smaller elevation difference, while El Bosc de Bonrepòs is longer, has a greater elevation difference and takes more time.

For day planning, the distance, time and elevation difference can be compared separately. The different durations of the two routes provide a clear comparison in terms of time: La Carrerada takes approximately 60 minutes, while the El Bosc de Bonrepòs circular route takes 2 hours 15 minutes. For planning purposes, you can classify the two routes according to their different distances, durations and elevation differences.

Landscape

El Bosc de Bonrepòs passes through vineyards, dry-farming orchards, holm oak and pine forests, open vegetation dominated by kermes oaks, and riverside vegetation. The landscape types along the trail can therefore be considered as cultivated areas, forest sections, open vegetation areas and vegetation along riverbanks.

Culture

The Cartoixa d’Escaladei was founded in 1194 and was the first Carthusian monastery on the Iberian Peninsula. The Cartoixa d’Escaladei adds a historical connection to the themes of nature, hiking and climbing.

Hiking and climbing

The traditional climbing areas at Montsant include El Masetan and Roc de la Cova. The grades there range from IV to VIII+. For bouldering, the El Balcó and La Font sectors are available; they are accessible from the village, and their grades range from 4a to 8b.

Hiking and climbing around La Morera de Montsant are organised according to different types of information. For hiking routes, the focus is on length, duration and elevation difference. For climbing areas and bouldering sectors, it is on the respective grades. The two types of routes can be considered side by side according to their own characteristics: hiking trails are defined by time and distance, while climbing options are defined by their grades.
